Hi! I’m Natalie Riess-Goetter, a cartoonist, illustrator and colorist. My wife Sara Riess-Goetter and I write and draw comics and graphic novels together in the Philly suburbs. We have a cat named Tilly who inspires a lot of our work!
My first print published work, SPACE BATTLE LUNCHTIME was published in 2016. I also made a webcomic called SNARLBEAR that ran from 2012 to 2017. Together, Sara and I have created DUNGEON CRITTERS (2020), THE BAWK NESS MONSTER (2023), BITSY AND BOOZLE TELL A STORY (2024) and three volumes of the graphic novelizations of WARRIORS: THE PROPHECIES BEGIN (2024, 2025, 2025).
I use a 13” wacom cintiq and photoshop to do most of my work but also work traditionally with watercolor, ink, colored pencils and graphite. I enjoy hiking, cooking, and making zines.

FAQ
Do you take commissions?
Personal commissions: not at the moment. If you’re an art director or editor who wants to hire me for illustration or colorist work, my schedule is busy but I might be able to fit your project in. Please send me an email to inquire about availability.
Can we buy Sara’s inked originals? Can I request a specific page?
We very occasionally sell some or auction the special favorite pages off for charity. When we do, it’ll get announced on social media.
Did you go to art school? Where did you go?
I have a BFA in illustration from Syracuse University. I also spent a lot of formative time in the 2010s webcomics scene, which is where I learned a lot of my comics and storytelling skills!
Do you have any tips for learning how to color?
I recommend reading James Gurney’s Color and Light, messing around trying new things, and doing a lot of studies from real life, art history, film, and contemporary stuff you like.
How long does it take you and Sara to make a book?
Usually, a little less than one year. We’re often juggling a few projects at once, but that’s just how much time it takes (at least!) to cook.
Which of your books is your favorite?
Dungeon Critters!!! Obviously I love them all, though.
